Video: “Detroit 2020 covers the support in Southwest Detroit for D3’s Option 5, and interviews D3 Director Kurt Metzger.”

I just fell upon this video on blog.datadrivendetroit.org. I know that the Detroit Cit Council has already made their decision to move forward with Option 3, but, last week, a lot of Detroiters were expressing support for D3’s Option 5. In this short video,  I really liked what was said about the importance of districting (or, in simpler terms, line drawing) in terms of keeping neighborhoods together:

Detroit2020: “[Option 5] is divided along major roads, freeways, and railroads. It keeps Downtown and Midtown as one district.”

Kurt Metzger: “[Option 5] holds them together. It avoids breaking up neighborhoods. It recognizes historic neighborhoods in Detroit, and doesn’t as much as possible cut through existing neighborhoods. By districting, you have, all of a sudden, people thinking about neighborhoods and neighborhoods coalescing together to rebuild.”

That last line, “neighborhoods coalescing together to rebuild,” is essential in my thesis. As I move forward this week with actual line-drawing of new districts, I need to keep this in mind. I need to be not only sympathetic to existing neighborhoods and their existing identities, but also about the possible of forming coalitions among multiple neighborhoods and how they can come together to “rebuild.” Stay tuned!
